Explosion Proof Cameras
for Hazardous Areas

Any environment classified as a hazardous location under NEC, IECEx, or ATEX standards may require explosion-proof camera equipment. Spectrum manufactures globally certified cameras used across the full spectrum of industries where flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust are present.

What Makes a Location
Hazardous?

A hazardous location is any area where flammable gases, vapors, liquids, combustible dust, or ignitable fibers may be present in sufficient quantities to create a risk of ignition. Regulatory bodies around the world have established classification systems to define these areas and specify the equipment that may be safely used within them.

Standard electrical equipment — including conventional security cameras — can generate sparks or surface heat sufficient to ignite a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Explosion-proof cameras are specifically engineered and certified to eliminate this risk.

North America NEC / CEC

The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) classifies hazardous locations by Class, Division, and Group. Class I covers flammable gases and vapors; Division 1 indicates the hazardous substance is present under normal operating conditions; Division 2 indicates it may be present under abnormal conditions.

Class I Div 1 Class I Div 2 Class II Class III
International IECEx / ATEX

The IEC 60079 standard and its regional implementations (ATEX in Europe, IECEx globally) use a Zone system to classify hazardous areas. Zone 0/20 indicates continuous presence; Zone 1/21 indicates occasional presence; Zone 2/22 indicates presence only under abnormal conditions.

Zone 1 Zone 2 Zone 21 Zone 22

If your facility has areas classified under any of these systems, certified explosion-proof equipment is required by regulation. Spectrum's cameras are certified for use in Class I Division 1 & 2, Zone 1 & 2, and equivalent international classifications. Contact us to verify compliance for your specific application.

Industries Where We Operate

The following industries represent some of the most common environments where explosion-proof cameras are required. This is not an exhaustive list — if your facility has classified hazardous areas, our cameras may be the right solution regardless of your sector.

Your industry not listed? Explosion-proof cameras are required wherever a hazardous area classification exists — regardless of sector. Aerospace, automotive, pulp & paper, grain handling, paint manufacturing, and many others operate classified areas that require certified equipment. Contact our engineering team to discuss your specific application.
