Explosion Proof Cameras
for Offshore & Marine
Offshore drilling platforms, FPSOs, marine vessels, and port facilities handling hydrocarbons face a dual challenge: explosion-proof certification for classified hazardous areas and corrosion resistance for constant exposure to saltwater, humidity, and marine atmospheres. Spectrum cameras are engineered to meet both requirements.
Two Requirements.
One Environment.
Offshore and marine environments present a combination of requirements that eliminates most standard industrial cameras from consideration. Hydrocarbon processing areas on platforms and vessels create classified hazardous areas — Class I Division 1 or Zone 1 — where explosion-proof certification is mandatory.
Simultaneously, constant exposure to saltwater spray, high humidity, and marine atmospheres demands corrosion-resistant materials and enclosures. Standard explosion-proof cameras designed for onshore industrial use may not be suitable for prolonged marine deployment without additional protection.
Spectrum's marine-grade aluminum housings are specifically suited for these combined requirements — providing certified explosion-proof performance in a construction designed to withstand the offshore environment.
Offshore Classification Requirements
Classification zones on offshore platforms and vessels are defined by the facility's safety case and applicable standards. Contact Spectrum with your platform or vessel classification documentation for product recommendations.
Where Cameras Are Deployed
in Offshore & Marine Operations
From drill floors and process decks to vessel cargo holds and port loading facilities, explosion-proof cameras provide continuous visual monitoring in the classified areas common throughout offshore and marine hydrocarbon operations.
Offshore Drilling Platforms
Monitoring of drill floors, derricks, process decks, and wellhead areas on fixed and floating platforms. PTZ cameras provide wide-area surveillance of large platform areas while fixed cameras cover critical equipment points.
FPSOs & Production Vessels
Surveillance of process modules, turret areas, and flare systems on Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessels. Marine-grade construction withstands the constant motion, saltwater, and humidity of vessel operations.
LNG & LPG Carriers
Monitoring of cargo tank areas, manifold decks, and compressor rooms on gas carriers where cryogenic cargoes and associated vapors create classified hazardous areas requiring certified equipment.
Marine Terminals & Jetties
Visual monitoring of loading arms, manifold areas, and tanker berths at marine terminals handling crude oil, refined products, or LNG. Covers both the fixed jetty infrastructure and the vessel-side classified zones.
Flare Stack Monitoring
Continuous surveillance of platform and vessel flare systems to monitor combustion quality and verify safe operation. Cameras provide visual confirmation that cannot be obtained by other means in these remote, elevated locations.
Remote Subsea & ROV Support
Visual monitoring of subsea operations, ROV deployment areas, and moonpool zones where hydrocarbon presence may create classified areas. Supports inspection operations without personnel exposure to hazardous areas.
What Certified Cameras Enable
in Offshore Operations
Certified for Offshore Classified Areas
ATEX and IECEx certifications cover Zone 1 and Zone 2 classified areas — the standard used across offshore platforms and vessels operating under international standards. cFMus certification available for North American-flagged or Gulf of Mexico operations.
Marine-Grade Construction
Marine-grade aluminum housings provide corrosion resistance suited to offshore and coastal environments. IP66/67 ingress protection guards against water jets and temporary immersion — essential for exposed deck locations.
Reduced Personnel Exposure
Remote visual monitoring of classified areas reduces personnel movement through hazardous zones on platforms and vessels. Particularly valuable where mustering distances are constrained and access management is critical.
Remote Monitoring via 4G/LTE
LTE-enabled camera options allow monitoring of remote offshore and coastal installations from onshore control rooms. Supports unmanned platform strategies and reduces offshore personnel requirements for routine surveillance.
