Explosion Proof Cameras
for Mining Operations
Underground and surface mining operations generate methane, coal dust, and other combustible materials that create classified hazardous areas requiring certified equipment. Spectrum's explosion-proof cameras provide continuous visual monitoring in some of the most demanding environments on earth.
A Dual Classification
Challenge
Mining operations present a unique challenge: many facilities must address both gas and vapor hazards (Class I / Zone 1) and combustible dust hazards (Class II / Zone 21) simultaneously. Underground coal mines contain methane gas; surface operations and processing facilities may generate coal dust, mineral dust, or other combustible particulates — each requiring different equipment classifications.
The presence of either hazard — gas or dust — creates a classified area where only certified explosion-proof or dust-ignition-proof equipment may be installed. Installing uncertified cameras in these areas creates both a life safety risk and a regulatory compliance violation.
Applicable standards include MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) requirements in the United States, as well as NEC Article 500, IECEx, and ATEX depending on the jurisdiction and classification system in use at the facility.

Where Cameras Are Deployed
in Mining Operations
From underground tunnels to surface processing plants, explosion-proof cameras provide visual monitoring in areas where human access is restricted, hazardous, or operationally impractical on a continuous basis.
Underground Tunnel Monitoring
Continuous surveillance of underground workings, entries, and haulage ways. Provides operators and safety personnel with real-time visual access to conditions without requiring physical entry into active mining areas.
Processing Plant Surveillance
Monitoring of crushing, grinding, screening, and classification areas where combustible dust is generated. Fixed and PTZ cameras cover conveyor systems, transfer points, and processing equipment.
Haulage & Material Transport
Visual oversight of haulage roads, conveyor galleries, and material handling areas. Supports traffic management, equipment monitoring, and safety compliance in active mining zones.
Safety & Compliance Monitoring
Ongoing surveillance supporting MSHA compliance, PPE verification, and emergency response. Video documentation supports incident investigations and regulatory inspections.
Remote Site Monitoring
4G/LTE enabled cameras for surface operations at remote mining sites where wired infrastructure is not available. Provides continuous monitoring without requiring permanent network installation.
Equipment & Asset Inspection
Visual inspection of underground and surface equipment in classified areas, reducing the need to enter hazardous zones for routine checks. Supports predictive maintenance programs.
What Certified Cameras
Enable in Mining
Personnel Safety
Remote visual monitoring reduces the need to send personnel into classified underground areas and active mining zones for routine surveillance and equipment checks. Minimizes exposure to methane, dust, and other hazards.
MSHA & Regulatory Compliance
Certified cameras satisfy equipment requirements for classified areas under MSHA, NEC, and applicable international standards. Certification documentation supports mine plan submissions and regulatory inspections.
Operational Visibility
Continuous visual monitoring of underground workings, processing plants, and haulage routes enables better operational decisions and faster response to abnormal conditions or equipment issues.
Remote Site Coverage
4G/LTE enabled options allow continuous monitoring of remote surface operations without requiring wired infrastructure. Ideal for open-cut mines, tailings facilities, and remote exploration sites.
