Explosion Proof Cameras for
Power & Utilities
Power generation facilities, wastewater treatment plants, and utility infrastructure handle flammable gases, combustible materials, and volatile chemicals that create classified hazardous areas throughout their operations. Spectrum's certified cameras provide continuous visual monitoring where standard equipment cannot be safely used.
Hazardous Areas Across
Power & Utility Operations
Power and utility facilities encompass a broad range of processes and infrastructure types — each with distinct hazardous area classification requirements. Gas-fired power generation plants contain areas classified for natural gas and hydrogen. Wastewater treatment facilities generate methane and hydrogen sulfide in digester and pump station areas. Hydroelectric and battery storage facilities present hydrogen hazards.
These classified areas vary significantly in their extent and classification level across different facility types, but share the common requirement: only certified explosion-proof electrical equipment may be installed within them. Standard surveillance cameras are not permitted.
For facilities subject to NFPA 70 (NEC) in the United States, equipment must be certified for the applicable class, division, and group. Internationally, ATEX and IECEx certification is required for the corresponding zone classification.
Common Classified Areas
in Power & Utility Facilities
- Gas turbine fuel supply areas
- Hydrogen-cooled generator areas
- Fuel oil storage and handling
- Battery rooms (hydrogen generation)
- Anaerobic digester areas
- Biogas collection and handling systems
- Pump stations with methane potential
- Chemical dosing and storage areas
Not all areas within power and utility facilities are classified. Area classification is determined by the facility's engineering team based on specific hazards and applicable standards. Contact Spectrum with your classification data for accurate product recommendations.
Where Cameras Are Deployed
in Power & Utility Operations
Explosion-proof cameras provide continuous visual monitoring in classified areas of power plants, water treatment facilities, and utility infrastructure — supporting safety, compliance, and operational oversight without introducing ignition risk.
Gas Turbine & Fuel Areas
Monitoring of gas turbine enclosures, fuel supply systems, and compressor areas in gas-fired power plants where natural gas creates classified hazardous zones requiring explosion-proof equipment.
Digester & Biogas Systems
Surveillance of anaerobic digesters, biogas collection, and gas handling systems at wastewater treatment facilities where methane generation creates Class I classified areas around process equipment.
Battery & Hydrogen Storage
Monitoring of battery rooms, hydrogen storage areas, and electrolyzer facilities where hydrogen generation during charging creates classified hazardous areas requiring certified explosion-proof equipment.
Pump Stations & Wet Wells
Visual monitoring of pump stations, wet wells, and lift stations in wastewater systems where hydrogen sulfide and methane accumulation creates classified confined-space areas with ongoing monitoring requirements.
Remote & Unmanned Facilities
4G/LTE enabled cameras for remote power substations, pumping stations, and utility infrastructure where continuous on-site personnel presence is not practical. Provides remote monitoring without permanent wired infrastructure.
Safety & Compliance Monitoring
Ongoing surveillance supporting OSHA, EPA, and utility regulatory compliance. Certified cameras satisfy equipment requirements in classified areas and video records support incident investigations and permit compliance documentation.
What Certified Cameras Enable
in Power & Utility Operations
Remote Monitoring of Classified Areas
Visual access to classified zones in power plants, pump stations, and digester areas without requiring personnel to enter. Enables continuous monitoring of equipment and process conditions from a central control room or remote location.
Regulatory Compliance
Certified cameras satisfy NEC, ATEX, and IECEx equipment requirements in classified areas. Supports compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70, and applicable environmental and utility regulatory frameworks governing hazardous area equipment.
Operational Continuity
Continuous visual monitoring supports faster detection of abnormal conditions, equipment issues, and security events at critical infrastructure facilities. Reduces response time and supports operational decisions without requiring physical access to hazardous areas.
LTE for Remote Infrastructure
4G/LTE enabled options allow monitoring of remote substations, pumping stations, and utility infrastructure without permanent wired connectivity. Supports unmanned facility strategies and reduces staffing requirements for routine surveillance.
